Windmills in Poros
Windmills are usually found on mountain slopes. However, in Poros of Elounda, near the canal, there are three windmills by the sea.
They have a thoroughly circular shape with a diameter that reaches 5 meters and belong to the so-called Round or Xetrocharis type. They have elaborate masonry of local semi-curved stones with a thickness of 80 centimetres. Their original roof has been replaced with a metal one, as in most mills of this type. This metal roof, the so-called "hood", with a suitable mechanism, can turn depending on the direction of the wind.
They were built at the beginning of the 20th century, and today, they have been listed as historical preserved monuments.
