In 1938-1939, in order to ensure convenient access around the island, the construction of the perimeter road is carried out. At several spots, the walls are demolished using dynamite, and the road is built on the rubble created by the construction materials of the fortifications.

An inscription on the eastern terrace commemorates the completion of the opening in 1939, which was made possible after the efforts of the " Brotherhood of the Sick of Spinalonga" and its president, Epaminondas Remoundakis.
